Congratulations to GGA Construction and RBCC for being honored in the 2020 Excellence in Construction Awards, General Construction/Construction Manager $5-10 million category for Excellence for the Clubhouse total interior renovation, the three additions to expand dining areas, a new second floor terrace, pool and deck, and locker rooms. The upscale coastal design was accented by custom fixtures, extensive millwork, antique mirrors and brass accents. GGA Construction also was honored for Excellence in GC/CM $20-30 million for the Hyatt Place Riverfront project in Wilmington, DE.
A special thank you to Lorri Grayson, President, GGA Construction (and now fellow Member), her team and everyone whom was involved, for providing us with such a great renovation.

At Rehoboth Beach Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Del., members are reaping the benefits of a club on the water year-round, thanks to a property-wide renovation project inspired by its coastal location. This past summer, the club unveiled brand-new men’s and women’s locker rooms as part of a larger renovation that included the clubhouse, pool and short-game greens.
By adding 6,000 sq. ft. to the 42,000-sq.-ft. clubhouse, both locker rooms benefitted from revamped spaces. The women’s locker room absorbed a former enclosed porch, while the men’s locker room was repositioned by transforming a former dining room into a men’s grill room. A combination of full and half lockers were swapped out in favor of stacked lockers.
“These lockers are about three-quarters of the size of a full locker and enable us to accommodate more [of them],” says General Manager/COO Michael MacDonald. The men now have 292 lockers, up from 251, and the women 115, up from 72).
To add some panache to an otherwise sterile setting, an inviting color palette was in order. “The colors selected around the club are light and airy, with an ocean feel, as we are located on Rehoboth Bay, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean,” notes MacDonald.
In the women’s locker room, maple lockers in white dove blend well with creamy furnishings and soft blue/grey carpeting. In the men’s locker room, rich mahogany lockers in cherry mocha exude a more masculine tone and are complemented by plaid carpeting.
To create a seamless design between wet and dry areas, each locker-room area flows directly into separate amenities, including a women’s card room and a men’s grill. “The layout was to provide an inviting entrance and sitting area where the members can relax with their friends while having lunch, cocktails and enjoying a sporting event or playing cards,” MacDonald explains.
In the women’s lounge, a floral-print couch and soft chairs create a cozy nook for unwinding by the fireplace. The men’s grill room is outfitted in navy wallpaper, wood tables and green leather chairs. Both genders also benefit from individual saunas—a first for the locker rooms (and a member-driven suggestion).
Since the August opening of the renovated space, Rehoboth Beach members have embraced the revamped amenities. “In the past, member would simply drop off their shoes, play golf and have lunch,” says MacDonald. “Now it’s more a place they can be proud to show their friends.” As evidence of this enthusiasm, he points out that 80 new members have joined the club since April. “This renovation has rejuvenated our club,” he adds.

Lofland Lands the Top Spot with a 73 (+1) at Rehoboth Junior Open

Rehoboth Beach, DE – Rehoboth Beach Country Club hosted the Philadelphia Junior Tour Tuesday, June 16. The waterfront property presented 45 juniors with a challenge against the 20 mph winds whipping across Rehoboth Bay.
Morgan Lofland (Paoli, PA) shot the day’s low with an impressive 73 (+1) to win the Boys 16-18 Division. He played consistent throughout his round, tallying three birdies to bring him the win. Anthony Ciconte (Wilmington, DE) trailed right behind him with a 76 (+4) to take second place. Ciconte finished strong with a string of five pars, shooting one over par on the back. In third place with a 77 (+5) was Matthew Miller (Camden, DE). Miller began the day with a strong front nine, marking a 37 (+1).
Finishing in first place for the Girls 16-18 Division was Suzie Ahn (Paoli, PA). Ahn shot a 99 (+27) with a par on both the front and back nine. Lily Wagner was on her heels coming in with a 100 (+28) to take second place. Wagner scored an impressive birdie on No. 8.
Matthew Homer (Wilmington, DE) took the gold in the Boys 13-15 Division. An even par on the front nine and two birdies earned him a win with a 75 (+3). In second place, with a 77 (+5) was Preston Worch (Rockville, MD). Worch was on a roll shooting nine pars in a row between the front and back. Tyler Debusschere (Wallingford, PA) finished his round with a 78 (+6) to claim third place. A total of 12 pars made for a set of 39’s on both nines.
In the Girls 13-15 Division, Sawyer Brockstedt (Rehoboth, DE) earned first place. Brockstedt showed up to compete with three birdies for a 74 (+2) on the day. Second place was awarded to Kate Barber (Savannah, GA). Barber shot an 80 (+8) and had a strong back nine with a birdie and five pars. Avery McCrery (Wilmington, DE) rounded out the top scores with an 88 (+16) for a third place finish. McCrery marked a birdie on the front and came back with string of six pars.
Davis Conaway (West Chester, PA) won the 12 & Under Division with a 43 (+7). Conaway tallied 3 pars and finished his round strong with a final par on No. 9. There was a tie for second place between Kylie Yiengst (Wyoming, DE) and Anthony Proud (Stroudsburg, PA), both shooting a 47 (+11). Yiengst started strong with a birdie on No. 1 and Proud made out with three pars on the day.

Changing the view
REHOBOTH BEACH — When General Manager Michael MacDonald looks out the bay windows at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club, he sees an ocean of possibilities for the club’s future. After building his career in Florida golf and social clubs, MacDonald is no stranger to stunning water views, but the one found at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club is second to none.
“Even in Miami, you had this great view of the water and you could see the city skyline. But you didn’t have much in terms of a big view like this,” he said. “At nighttime, you can see the houses across the bay light up and that gives it a ethereal, spectacular feel. When people ask what’s our brand, I say ‘this view is it.’”
To capitalize on that brand, MacDonald is overseeing a $10.5 million renovation of the 95-year-old country club. In Feb. 2019, the membership approved a plan to overhaul the clubhouse and expand the pool area and golf course amenities, financed and paid by the membership. The end goal is to inspire current members and to draw new ones.

DuPont retiree focuses on philanthropy, empowering women

The first woman president of Rehoboth Beach Country Club is set to oversee a $10 million renovation of the club, founded in 1925 as a nine-hole golf course with a converted farmhouse for a clubhouse.
Dressed in a royal blue jacket that rivals the brilliance of the Rehoboth Bay outside, Lynn Adams Kokjohn gushed when explaining the comprehensive improvements that will transform amenities and services of her beloved club.
“We will be making much better use of our waterside setting. You can’t beat the view!” she said, gesturing to the bay surrounding the club on three sides.

Blue Hen Invitational set Oct. 19-20 at Rehoboth Beach CC

Rehoboth Beach Country Club will once again host the Blue Hen Invitational tournament Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20. The University of Delaware women’s golf team will compete against NCAA Division I opponents such as the Naval Academy, Georgetown University and Dartmouth.
The shotgun start for the 36-hole event begins at 8 a.m., Saturday. Admission is free, and this is a great opportunity to watch some young talent on a challenging course.

A golf course may look like a natural setting, but a lot of work is required to create that illusion.
Rehoboth Beach Country Club is now busy with a major renovation project that with any luck will be completed in time for the 2018 golf season.
